Slumdog surfers: amazing computer experiments with Indian children

Professor Sugata Mitra is the Indian academic who allowed Indian slum children to work out computers for themselves. I’ve long heard of these fascinating ‘hole in the wall’ experiments, and was really interested to watch his story in this TED lecture. (Read more on Professor Mitra and his work.)

It is mind-blowing just how far motivated children can get on their own. What will it be like when affordable tablets are available to many relatively poor Indian kids for education?

The youth challenge

But here’s the challenge. For those kids who will have a web connection through these cheap tablets (or any other route), where will they find evangelistic material that is contextualized for their own culture, language and religion, and assumes they have zero Christian knowledge? There is precious little even for unchurched western young teens, and I know nothing available for Indians in this age bracket. I’d love to be proved wrong, of course. Here’s a major need, for a rapidly growing audience. It should be at the top of our agendas, surely? Visual story, as video shorts, will be major part of this.
