Hidden themes in movies
Michael Landon, director of film The Velveteen Rabbit, is interviewed by CT magazine, on his thoughts about being a Christian in Hollywood. (You can subscribe to Christianity Today Movies for more good stuff like this.)
The Velveteen Rabbitis a classic children’s book which explores the moving and recurring theme of being made ‘real’ through a search for redemptive love. Spielberg’s Artificial Intelligence engages with this at a more adult level, as do so many other books and films – Love of Seven Dolls by Paul Gallico is just one such classic.
Indeed, the question has often been asked – Why do non-Christians often make the best Christian films?. They are often far better at creating a sense of longing, or asking challenging questions without then trying to hammer home some answers.
Most stories and films contain redemptive themes and parallels. I was struck yet again last week, on watching Slumdog Millionaire (great film – do go to see it) by just how many ready-made opportunities God gives us through supposedly secular story-telling.
We can use these echoes of eternity in many types of evangelism, especially online. So few Christians seem to be using these opportunities.
