What is ‘augmented reality’?

Yet another mobile phone facility on the way: ‘augmented reality’. It overlays additional information on what you can see around you, in the same way as a pilot’s ‘head-up’ screen. Will it turn into a useful feature? (Watch video below.)

However, the video reminded me that we already have augmented reality as Jesus-followers. Before we were followers, we likely looked at most things without discerning their deeper meaning or true value. Now, we are able to overlay our perception of everything with a new layer. Of course, down here in Shadowlands, it is an imperfect ‘through a glass darkly’ layer.

One aspect of evangelism is helping others to see that there could be an ‘augmented reality’ overlay that they can apply to the world and themselves. Jesus’ parables were surely such an overlay: a familiar incident or common experience used to point to eternal truths.

This is why the embedded parallels within movies and stories have so much potential as a starting place for evangelism. Please add your thoughts about augmented reality on the ‘comment’ link below.
