Amazing mobile phones and the next billion Internet users

Memorably, the first spoken words in the first movie with a (partially) synchronized soundtrack were, “Wait a minute, wait a minute. You ain’t heard nothin’ yet!” (in The Jazz Singer).

In the world of digital phones access especially in the Majority World, we have barely seen anything yet! Did I ever mention this before?

This very significant article in Time Magazine shows just how strategic mobiles will be: Why the Internet’s Next Billion Users Will Be Mobile-Only.

Implications

  • Any mission agency, any national church, any ministry, especially in the Majority World, which does not have mobile at the top of its agenda, is failing to understand God’s plan for effective communication.
  • Any website should be optimized for mobile viewing. (WordPress-powered sites have the benefit of an automatic easy switch to a mobile version.)
  • Majority world phone users are acutely aware of the relatively high cost of data. Apps, websites and downloads should be as low bandwidth as possible. Do the research. See how Wikipedia deals with this issue.
  • There are a growing number of discipleship and Bible apps that work, at least partially, offline.

  • […] Speaking Tech – The subsequent billion individuals to hitch the web gained’t be doing so on a Mac, PC or pill. “Any mission company, any nationwide church, any ministry, particularly within the Majority World, which doesn’t have cellular on the prime of its agenda, is failing to know God’s plan for efficient communication.” Hyperbole maybe, but worth considering.
